9. Biography: A biography in the "History of Tours", 1988. Albert and Annie (Jupe) Schroeder Family
Albert was just three years old when his parents left Becken, Germany, for America. Since they were living close to the Rhine River, it is probable that they carried their luggage to its banks and cruised down the river to Rotterdam where they booked passage. Albert was too young to remember the Old Country and the ocean voyage.
He celebrated his birthday on July 14, 1886. He had two older brothers, William and Anton, and was followed by a little sister, Katherine. His other six brothers were born in Tours. His parents, William and Gertrude (Bielenberg), loved their family. A good family life was their prime value.
Albert attended St. Martin's School when he reached the age of eight. Some of his teachers were, Sisters Jane Frances, Leocadia, Mathias, Josepha and Regis. For the German children classes were in German, and Bohemian was the language for the Bohemian children.
Albert was a good-natured, easy-going person and very sociable. He loved people. It was quite an adjustment for him when he married Annie Jupe on October 29, 1907. She was work oriented and there was no time for fun until the work was done and that rarely happened. Sundays were times for visiting. They frequented the Jupe family and the Schroeder parents. Pies, coffee cake and cakes appeared on the table at four o'clock. The coffee klatsh was always enjoyed. After this repast, families usually returned home to take care of the farm chores. Cows had to be milked and, fed, chickens fed and eggs gathered and hogs "slopped".
Annie prepared only a light meal for after those rich pastries; appetites were weak.
Albert farmed because that was the only way to make a living in Tours. He bought a farm along the Tours-West road and remained there until Annie died. In mid-August she was admitted to the hospital for locked bowels. She died on August 20, 1933. Their two oldest daughters were married. The household now consisted of Albert, Louise, Leo and Albina. Louise married in early 1935 and Albina also entered the state of matrimony in late 1935.
After Annie's death, Albert married Rosa Cocek. At first, he was the manager of the Lounge in Leroy and later managed one in West. He and Rosie enjoyed this kind of occupation. Albert loved to play pool.
On June 1, 1951, Albert died of a heart attack and was buried in St. Martin's Cemetery.
